外国人怎么翻译“洪荒”之力？
国学启蒙读物中有一部梁朝散骑侍郎周兴嗣编纂的《千字文》，不少幼童尚可脱口而出：“天地玄黄 ，宇宙洪荒 。日月盈昃 ，辰宿列张 。寒来暑往 ，秋收冬藏 。闰余成岁， 律吕调阳 。”这几天“洪荒”这个词“上了头条”。
Nathan Sturman的《千字文》译本如是开篇：The sky was black and earth yellow; space and time vast, limitless. 这里对“洪荒”的解释有所引申，用“荒”来形容“宇”之广，用“洪”来形容“宙”之久。
记得贾谊《过秦论》中有文：“囊括四海之意，并吞八荒之心。”这“八荒”的字面意思是“八个方向”，古人常用“六合八方”指代“宇宙”一词中的“宇”（空间）。那么这“洪”又是什么呢？严复翻译赫胥黎大作《天演论》，有说法叫“远及洪荒”，指上古久远年代，诸多人类神话中都描述里其发展早期的“大洪水”，这个“洪”大概可以想象为大禹或诺亚的史前时代。
CCTV英语频道提供了“直白”的版本“prehistorical powers”，中国气象台网则使用了“primeval”，大概受到电影《远古入侵》(Primeval)的启发。
